Prior to qualifying
as a clinical psychologist in 1982, Martin worked in HR in the manufacturing
sector gaining experience in recruitment and selection, training and
employment relations. He began a private practice in 1983 and focussed
on providing general clinical psychology services to meet a wide range
of referrals. These came from GP’s, psychiatrists, schools and the
business community.
Martin attends
training workshops and conferences regularly to keep abreast of developments
in the field. He has developed an integrated approach to therapy and
consultation drawing on many different schools of thought and practice.
His goal is to fit therapy and consultation to individual client’s
needs and goals.
Since 1994 Martin
has been working for the Taranaki District Health Board in the Community
Adult Mental Health Unit. He also maintains a private practice in New
Plymouth. Martin works with people experiencing a broad range of difficulties,
including
- depression and anxiety
- complicated grief reactions
- eating disorders
- post-traumatic stress disorders
- obsessive-compulsive difficulties
- relationship difficulties
- pain management
- critical incident debriefing
Martin also works
with stress-related problems and has run programmes in New Zealand and
overseas to raise awareness and improve coping skills in this area.
He also regularly provides supervision for clinicians and supervisors/managers
to facilitate their professional practice.
When not working
Martin enjoys spending time with his family, fishing and keeping fit.
