Specialists in Depression
and Anxiety Counselling

Many people can feel nervous about seeing a Psychologist, especially talking to them about personal things which they may not have spoken about before.

Our clients tell us that it was easier than expected. We don’t use couches and we never “shrink” people. We work with you to pinpoint what factors are working together to cause your difficulties. We then develop collaborative strategies to challenge and change these feelings or behaviours.

At TalkingPoint our aim is to reduce your psychological stress and promote your well-being. There is no need for a referral, simply call or email us to make an appointment.

What is depression?

Depression is a period of time when you feel low. It goes beyond just feeling down though - it lasts for longer periods of time and often includes having no interest in things you used to enjoy. When you’re depressed, it can feel like things will never get better.

What is aniexty?

Anxiety is feeling fear or panic about certain situations, or constantly being on edge. It often manifests as a fear of failure, fears about being judged, or that something bad is about to happen. Anxiety is often based on irrational thoughts or perceptions, or as a result of past experiences. Anxiety symptoms are similar to stress, but are more persistent. Short term feelings of stress are normal, but it becomes anxiety when you can’t stop feeling this way.

Linking depression and aniexty

Depression and anxiety are two separate things, but many people feel both at the same time. For example, if you feel anxious about failure or being judged in certain situations, anxiety can lead you to stop trying. It can be easier to cope with failure when you feel like you didn’t give it your best. You stop trying with other things to avoid your anxiety, this leads to you feeling failure even more. Constant failure impacts your mood and you end up feeling constantly low - or depressed. There are plenty of other scenarios where anxiety leads to depression, or depression leads to anxiety. The issue with these situations is being able to recognise both depression and anxiety, and getting therapies that help with both.

Depression and aniexty counselling

Counselling for depression and anxiety is about giving you the tools to overcome the way you feel, reframe negative thoughts in your head and become more active again. There are many different tools and techniques you can use, and these depend on your own specific challenges. Regardless of the form of therapy, the goal is to enable you to recognise unhelpful thoughts and deal with them so you can continue to live a happy, fulfilled life. Medication is often considered the first form of treatment for both depression and anxiety because most people talk to their doctor first. Medication can be effective in quieting negative thoughts and helping you feel better. It does have a place in helping to deal with these types of mental health issues, but it’s only one part of a multifaceted mental wellbeing strategy. A combined approach is recommended.
