For example, if you feel anxious about failure or being judged in certain situations, anxiety can lead you to stop trying. It can be easier to cope with failure when you feel like you didn’t give it your best.

You stop trying with other things to avoid your anxiety, this leads to you feeling failure even more. Constant failure impacts your mood and you end up feeling constantly low – or depressed.

There are plenty of other scenarios where anxiety leads to depression, or depression leads to anxiety.

The issue with these situations is being able to recognise both depression and anxiety, and getting therapies that help with both. Medication is often considered the first form of treatment for both depression and anxiety because most people talk to their doctor first. Medication can be effective in quieting negative thoughts and helping you feel better.

It does have a place in helping to deal with these types of mental health issues, but it’s only one part of a multifaceted mental wellbeing strategy.
